Athlete's Foot

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that develops in the moist areas between your toes but also on other parts of your foot. Athletes foot can be both painful and irritating as it usually causes itching, stinging and burning.

Athlete's Foot - Symptoms

There are numerous signs and symptoms of athlete's foot and it is unlikely or very rare at least, that you will encounter all of them; listed below are the most common athlete’s foot symptoms:

  • Itching, stinging and burning between your toes, most commonly between the fourth and fifth toes
  • Itching, stinging and burning on the soles of your feet
  • Itchy blisters
  • Cracking and peeling skin, especially between your toes and on the soles of your feet
  • Extremely dry skin on the bottoms or sides of the feet
  • Toenails that are thick, crumbly, ragged, discolored or pulling away from the nail bed

Athlete’s Foot - Causes

Without going into too much detail, the athlete’s foot is a fungal contamination that affects the superficial layer of skin, this infection causes the basal layer of skin to produce more skin cells than usual.

The increase in the number of skin cells pushing towards the surface causes the skin to become thick and scaly in infected areas. Most often, the more the fungi spread, the more scales your skin produces, causing the ring of advancing infection to form.

The perfect conditions that allow for the organisms that cause athlete's foot to thrive, are indicative of the environment that sports shoes provide; damp, warm, and moist areas in a confined location. People who live in warm humid areas tend to have a higher percentage of sufferers compared to people living in cooler climates.

Athlete's foot is a contagious infection and is often spread in public areas such as swimming pools, locker rooms and showers for example.

Athlete’s Foot - Prevention

Here are some simple tips that may help you avoid athlete's foot or at least ease the symptoms if you suffer an infection:

  • Ensure your feet are kept as dry as possible, especially between your toes. Air your feet as often as possible by going barefoot.
  • Wear cotton socks. Wearing socks that are made of a natural material, such as cotton or wool, or possibly even a synthetic fiber that has been designed to draw moisture away from your feet.
  • Change socks regularly. If you have a problem with sweaty feet, change your socks twice a day when you can.
  • Wear light, well-ventilated shoes. Avoid shoes made of synthetic material, such as vinyl or rubber.
  • Alternate your footwear. This allows time for your shoes to dry out thoroughly.
  • Protect your feet in public places. Wear waterproof sandals or shower shoes in communal showers, and public pools.
  • Always Treat your feet. Even if you are not suffering an attack of Athlete’s foot always use an antifungal powder daily.
  • Never borrow shoes. Borrowing shoes will obviously increase the risk of spreading a fungal infection.

Athlete’s Foot - Treatments and drugs

For a mild case of athlete's foot, there are many over-the-counter antifungal creams, spray, powder or ointment available. Most fungal infections respond well to these treatments as long as you follow the package directions.

However, if you are a sufferer of a more severe case of athlete’s foot you may need to contact your doctor for a prescription strength medication that depending upon the severity of your infection could either be a lotion, spray, ointment or powder or in the most severe cases an oral medication.

There are side-effects from many of the oral medications used in the treatment of athlete’s foot and include gastrointestinal upset, rash and abnormal liver function.
